INTERFACE

SITE - THE MARINE DRIVE PROMENADE IS LOCATED IN ONE OF THE BUSIEST AREAS OF THE CITY WHERE CITIZENS TAKE IN A BREATH OF FRESH AIR AND VIEW THE DAILY SUNSETS.


THE SITE EXPERIENCES EXTREME CONDITIONS, SIDED BY A BUSY ROAD ON ONE SIDE AND THE LARGE UNENDING SEA ON THE OTHER. THIS ACTS AS A FRINGE CONDITION BETWEEN LAND AND SEA. THE STRONG WAVES ARE STOPPED FROM HITTING THE LAND WITH THE HELP OF HEAVY CONCRETE TETRA PODS CALLED WAVE - BREAKERS. THE SUDDEN TRANSITION FROM SEA TO LAND IS BUFFERED BY THESE EXISTING TIDE BREAKERS. THESE ARE DESIGNED AND PLACED TO RESIST TO HIGH TIDE CONDITIONS ALSO.

DUE TO RANDOM PLACEMENT AND INVOLUNTARY INTERLOCKING OF THESE BLOCKS, SPACES FORM WHERE VERY LITTLE WATER IS ACCUMULATED AND THE SPACE ENTIRELY BECOMES UNUSABLE.



PROGRAM SELECTION - THE SITE BEING SITUATED IN THE VICINITY OF TWO EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTES, REQUIRES A PROGRAM WHICH FULFILLS THE NEEDS OF ITS INHABITANTS. THEREFORE THE SELECTED PROGRAM INCLUDES A READING AREA AND VIEWING GALLERY FOR STUDENTS AS WELL AS RESIDENTS.





CONCEPT

THE BASIC FUNCTION OF A WAVE - BREAKER IS TO LITERALLY BREAK THE FORCE OF THE WAVE AND DISSIPATE THE WATER IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS. THEY ARE ALSO KEPT HOLLOW NEAR THE SEA FACE SO THAT THE WATER FLOWS INTO THEM AND ACCUMULATES WITHIN, BREAKING THE FORCE SAFEGUARDING THE LAND FROM HIGH TIDE.

OUR DESIGN INVOLVES A PROPOSED MODULE FOR A WAVE - BREAKER REPEATS ITSELF IN A PARTICULAR MANNER FORMING AN ORGANIZED STRUCTURE OFFERING HABITABLE SPACES AT DIFFERENT LEVELS. ITS EXPERIENTIAL QUALITIES INCLUDES LIGHT, SOUND AND UNDULATING SURFACES. PROGRAMMATICALLY IT ACTS AS A READING SPACE AND GALLERY FOR SMALLER AND LARGER GROUPS.

THIS STRUCTURE FORMS THE PHYSICAL LINK, BLURRING BOUNDARIES AND BRINGING THE MASS FROM LAND TO SEA.










THE ABOVE DIAGRAMS REPRESENT THE PROPOSED WAVE BREAKERS WHICH REPEAT THEMSELVES FORMING SPACES AT DIFFERENT LEVELS. THESE SPACES ARE USED DURING DIFFERENT TIMES OF THE DAY i.e HIGH TIDE AND LOW TIDE. THE DIFFERENT MODULES ARE USED TO ALLOW DIFFUSED / DIRECT SUNLIGHT AND REVERBERATED SOUND.
